Analysing Bad pop-punk Album covers

Fall Out Boy - Save Rock and Roll
This Fall out Boy album cover would be hard to imitate as an album cover because it would be time consuming to digitally manipulate an image and neither me or Sam have the skills for that.
As a pop-punk album cover this is also a bad example because it shows none of the conventions of a typical pop-punk album. The image of a Russian doll with burnt match sticks in is a failed attempt at trying to be edgy because the image, coupled with the text, just makes the picture look like a painting you would find in a art gallery.
Overall, even if we could imitate this album I don't think it would be a good idea as it isn't very pop-punk.

Analysing Iconic Album Covers

Green Day - American Idiot

Greendays American Idiot album is an iconic album cover because when people see the image of the hand holding the red grenade heart they automatically know what album it is from.
The simplicity if the design makes it more recognisable to people because the white hand stands out from the black background.
The text on the album cover is also very simplistic. It uses the white and red to tie in with the image that is also these colours and this keeps it consistent and memorable.
The simplistic nature of the album sticks in with the pop-punk genre of taking the easy way out with all of the promotion and designing of the albums and focusing purely on the performance aspect of the band. This album cover is an example of how using a simplistic design has paid off and become iconic.

London Calling - The Clash
London Calling is an iconic album cover because of the picture on the front. The image depicts Joe Strummer the singer taking a guitar and starting to smash it up. The picture makes the album cover iconic because it shows the more punk and edgy side of the punk scene which people remember.

Video Idea One

The video will be a mix between a narrative and live band footage.

The Live band footage will be shot at my house where the band are playing to a crowd of people. It will be made to look like it is a real party as much as possible.

For the narrative section of the video we have decided that we are going to use a boy and girl that are dating and the girl gets jealouse when the boy is with other girls so tries to make him jealouse and after a series of events they break up but they may get back together

Blink 182 Album Covers

This is the front cover for Blink-182's 6th album Neighbourhoods which was released in 2011.

The cover is  a copy of a pencil drawing of a city skyline with words and names on various parts of it.

This is one of the most grown up album covers that Blink-182 have done.
The back cover of the album sleeve is pretty basic because it consists of the track listing and the bands logo.

The track listings are written in the same font as the bands name is on the front cover which makes it consistent.

The Blink-182 logo is necessary because it is like the bands identity.
This is the inside of the album. This inside cover carries on the theme of the hand drawn city skyline.

The actual CD has a larger image of the Blink-182 logo, the band name and the name of the album on.

the consistency of the neighbourhood skyline image is a good thing because it makes the album stand out more.

This is the front of link-182's Greatest Hits album.

On the front of the album there is the blink-182 logo accompanied by the band name. The combination of the logo and name is so that people will be able to recognise it easily as a Blink-182 album.
The back of the Greatest Hits album features a shot of the band from their Greatest Hits tour. The text that lists the songs is the same text from when the songs are on the original albums.

The band shot on the back cover shows the band on their last date of the tour previous to the album release.
The inside  of the Greatest Hits album is pretty basic  with the album insert being plain black with a small paragraph in white text.

The CD is also very simple and basic with it being completely black and then the bands logo in white over it.

Analysing Good pop-punk Album Covers

Jimmy Eat World - Sweetness

The album cover for Jimmy Eat World -Sweetness would be an easy cover to imitate because it consists of a white background with a still of the band performing. This still could be taken from the performance footage in the video or from a photo-shoot.
The text on the album is also easy to imitate as it is a common, yet effective, font with the work eat in italics and a different colour.

This type of album cover is common with in the pop-punk genre because it allows the band to show that they can perform and play instruments without the fans having to go to a concert.
The pop-punk genre is also very simplistic so with an album cover they are looking to portray that it was just a quick thing that was put together because they focus more on their music.

A Day To Remember - For Those Who Have Heart

This album cover is also a good example of a pop-punk album but this one uses the bands logo instead of a shot of the band.
Most pop-punk bands tend to opt for this option over the band shot image because the logo means that they will have a recognisable image that people will associate with them.

However, I don't think that an album cover with a band logo on would be a good thing for us to do because we would have to think of an original idea for a logo and it would take up a lot of time to design and finalise. also, none of the group members are artistic so having to draw a logo would create a problem.

Storyboard Animatic

The music video that we are going to produce will last roughly three minuets and to make sure we keep track of the progress we are producing a hand drawn storyboard. The storyboard will depict the order we want the video to go in and will help us to produce a shooting schedule later on.

The animatic of the storyboard

Blink-182 Record Lable

Blink 182 were signed to the record label Interscope, which is also responsible for other pop-punk bands like The All American Rejects, for the release of their latest album 'Neighbourhoods'. After the release of this album Blink 182 went into talks to be dropped from Interscope and are now an independent band.

Getting the Performers

In order for the staged house party to look realistic we are looking to gather a group of about 20 to 25 friends. We think that this is a reasonable number because the rooms we are shooting in are fairly small and we need it to look busy but still have room for the band to set up and perform.

In terms of the band we have enlisted the help of our friend that is a drummer, we are also using his drum kit, so that when we do close up shots of him playing it looks more realistic than if we got someone to act like they are playing the drums.

For the singer we are going to ask a performing arts student because the front man of the band has to be outgoing and be able to emphasise their actions. The singer also has to be the guitarist because the band that's songs we are doing a cover of the singer also plays the guitar. To make it look realistic we will get the person to learn the sections that we will be doing close ups of and then they can just repeat that for the rest of the video.

For the bass player we are going to ask a performing arts student and teach them the bass part that we are going to do a close up of the instrument. For the rest of the band shots the bass player can just play the learnt part over and over because it will make the video realistic if it at least looks like the band members know what they are doing.

Music Videos Over Time

Over time the technology that is used to film and produce music videos has improved greatly. This meant that the quality of thr final piece has become more clear.

As for the actual footage that gets used in music videos it has become more and more distorted in terms of the narrative in the video. Another contrast between modern day music videos and older ones is that green screen is a common feature in modern videos as it allows for the video to use different footage that may not be easy to shoot without digital aid.

In modern music videos the video tends to focus more on the singers because of the lack of instruments that feature in some genres. The main genres that do this are pop and rap music as many of the artists can't play an instrument and it wouldn't look professional if the artist was playing the wrong note of an instrument throughout the video. In older videos they were more instrument based because in order for the artist to become a recognised recording artist they had to write there own music and do a lot of legwork, as there were no tv talent shows, to become signed to a record label.

Don't Leave Me - Blink 182

Don't leave me all alone
Just drop me off at home
I'll be fine, it's not the first
Just like last time, but a little worse

And she said that I'm not the one that she thinks about
And she said it stopped being fun, I just bring her down
I said, "Don't let your future be destroyed by my past"
She said, "Don't let my door hit your ass"

One more chance, I'll try this time
I'll give you yours, I won't take mine
I'll listen up, pretend to care
Go on ahead, I'll meet you there

And she said that I'm not the one that she thinks about
And she said it stopped being fun, I just bring her down
I said, "Don't let your future be destroyed by my past"
She said, "Don't let my door hit your ass"

Let's try this one more time with feeling
One more time with feeling
One more time with feeling
One more time with feeling

And she said that I'm not the one that she thinks about
And she said it stopped being fun, I just bring her down
I said, "Don't let your future be destroyed by my past"
She said, "Don't let my door hit your ass"

Don't leave me all alone
Just drop me off at home
And I'll be fine
